Smart Phone Ban

The NSW Government is reviewing whether there should be a ban on smartphones in NSW Schools.

Known as a "dumbphone" policy, a study into the proposal is being led by child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg after a review of smartphone use on school grounds across the state.

"These are phones that don't have a camera, that don't access the internet," he said.

"But they still afford young people the opportunity to communicate with their parents which I think is a legitimate role."

Worth a read.

Re: Smart Phone Ban

Some schools here have implemented a ban, I think it is a good idea.

My grandson's school have just banned them, he's glad as he said the kids were looking at their phones at breaktime instead of interacting, he felt lonely.

One can only hope that we are going back to being sensible again where our children are concerned and finally realising that not all technology is the right thing when used at the wrong times.

Kids should be permitted to take their phones to school with them, but they should not be permitted to use them during school hours.

For me this is a no brainer Meg.
Ban them in the classroom.
End of!
In fact if I had my way the phones would be taken off the little darlings at the school gate.
And then just perhaps.
This lot coming through might learn something useful.
For a good start, paying attention to teacher may be one!

agreed - mobile phones have become an almost essential means of kids being able to contact their parents :

1. if they are sick or injured - then they are a means for teachers to contact parents

2. after school they are essential for some kids to contact their parents for transport arrangements or "sleep over" arrangements.

banning phones completely is a withdrawal of modern liberties and also dangerous in an increasingly dangerous world.

I am all in favor of phones not being either used or available for use during school hrs - this would then require a system of safe storage, which I believe is essential in a world of modern communication processes.

We have a couple of "secret squirrel" rooms at work where mobile phones are not allowed and there are small lockers provided for the storage of phones during working hours.

School is for learning not for texting and playing on the internet. Phones can be used before and after school but not in school time. Teachers have parents contact numbers should they need to be contacted in school time

Re: Smart Phone Ban

It's a great idea to allow only basic phones so they can still contact parents in an emergency. Will be a nightmare for teachers to implement though particularly with the no touch policies etc.
