Plants for a bathroom

I'm currently decorating the bathroom.
It has a boxed in pipes area that runs along the foot of one wall about 8 inches high from floor and four inches wide which has some holes for access to the water, shower drain and central heating pipes inside which I would like to disguise.
I am looking for plants that could be put on this low "shelf" preferably trailing, bathroom friendly and also dog and cat friendly (future plans for pets) so that I can hide the holes etc.

Nice idea MC.

Not sure about trailing though, as if the shelf is only 8" high, a plant won't have far to trail before it hits the floor.

Also you need to bear in mind the particular plant's needs e.g. is the shelf semi-dark away from a light source? Does the plants need sun or shade etc.

Have a look at this, it might give you some ideas. Hope the link works.

Ah, cat friendly means that a Peace Lily is out of the question which is a shame because they seem to love the humidity. We do have a Peace Lily in out bathroom but the cats are not allowed near it.

The only other thing I can think of is some kind of succulent which seem to do well, something like a Christmas Cactus. Not really trailing though.... Will have a think.

I find spider plants do really well in bathrooms. They don't trail but their babies do. When they get too long just snip them free and pot them up

My daughter has ferns and orchids in hers, they seem to do well. I put orchids in mine but they died, not steam enough I expect.

MC, I also think succulents might be good. There are lots of ones in lovely little pots, buy a few and line them up if it's all going to be skirting board level.
Failing that some 'faux' succulents, then you can wash any (cough) splatters when using the loo

Or what about those 'air' plants.... can't think what they're called, but they don't need watering I think, and are small.

Peace Lily and Christmas cactus made me chuckle for a small space Dingy.
Mum years ago had a Christmas cactus that was just about dead. She was going to throw it out, but I said I'd see if I could do anything with it.
I lived in a flat then so put it on the only available space, the toilet cistern. (No window ledge).

Over the years it grew and grew, flowered beautifully through various house moves until finally, I had no room for it
Can't remember what I did with it then

Same thing with the Peace Lily, but that was in various lounges in various house moves, and grew quite large. Ended up giving that away.

Re: Plants for a bathroom

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.
Although the boxed in part with the three access holes I am trying to hide is low down its a very bright bathroom with a south facing window, so plenty of light in the room for plants.
Thank you
