Prime Numbers

Ok, so most of us know what a Prime number is;

A number that can only be divided evenly by itself or one.

Unless you are a computer programmer, do you think you have ever used prime numbers in a practical way?

I might have done but I have no idea.

Re: Prime Numbers

not really, but I note that the numbers core to the Pleiades Mystery are all primes:

3 5 7 1

Re: Prime Numbers

Thanks Realist.

Your thread on the Pleiades looks very interesting and I will read through it properly when I get a bit of time. I have always enjoyed looking at The Pleiades even before I knew what it was. It looks amazing through a telescope or bins as does Orion but sadly I don't have anything powerful enough to see the Horsehead Nebula properly.

I suppose that's my point really Julie. I can remember being taught about Prime Numbers and also the Fibonacci sequence at school but I don't remember using them in every day life.

Re: Prime Numbers

There is a lot of stuff we all come out of school with never to be used again, I'm not sure it wouldn't be better to drop some and teach a more practical course so we can all calculate carpets and curtains, or all garden and fix our cars etc.

Re: Prime Numbers

I know that if the bill comes to a prime number it's going to be difficult to share the cost.
