Desktop freezes.

This happens quite often. All the links to various sites on my desktop just freeze and nothing happens when I click on them.

I do a restart on my machine and everything's ok again.

Can anybody explain why this is?

Carol,

Are you talking about links to the internet?

Or attempts to open programs/apps?

What Platform are you on? (W7.0, W10...?)

How much memory (RAM) do you have?

What Antivirus do you use?

When did you last carry out a disk check?

If you go into File Manger & click on the C: drive, to get into properties, does it tell you how full your drive is?

Whilst there, go to "Tools" and run the check app.

I've had so many problems with IE after upgrading to Windows 10 that I've switched to Google Chrome.

I think that MS aren't bothered about maintaining IE.

Yes - links to the internet.

How can a simple act like turning it on & off cure the problem? - that's what puzzles me.

"Edge" is Microsoft's browser of choice for Windows 10 and that isn't very good I have gone back to Google Chrome.

Just closing and re-opening IE doesn't work but restarting does? Perhaps that's because in MS Windows, IE (or 'Edge' on W.10) is an integral part of the operating system itself. It becomes necessary to restart the whole system in order to open IE cleanly again.

Other browsers can be installed on the system though and having a second browser installed is not a bad thing to have. Even if you decide that it isn't as good as IE, it can at least be used to see if the same problem occurs.

Like others, you might even find the alternative browser preferable to IE and stick with it.

Do you carry out any regular computer maintenance?

Re: Desktop freezes.

What internet speed do you have Carol?
Of course a low speed can badly effect surfing and cause buffering.
Also I use a free program called CCeaner Free.
This clears out all your cookies and internet cache and other junk stuff, so leaves everything mean and clean.
I highly recommend it.
Just google it and download it, and I hope this helps you.

PS
Just make sure you only download the free version, and not the professional paid for version.
You don't need that!

Edwin, does it matter whether you download that from 'Piriform' or 'Ccleaner' or other, please?
I'm always suspicious what I am downloading.
