The interesting thing about the colour on those hills is that it is about as thick as your fingernail. Less than a fraction of a mm below the surface it is very blonde coloured sandstone.
The red is oxidised iron (rust or iron ore) the dark colour is Algae in the rock. if it were not for these two reactions the rock would erode much quicker.
The Bungle Bungles have only really been widely known about since the 1980s prior to that only a few cattlemen knew of their existence.
The road to them is still a very rough dirt track suitable only for four wheel drives.
