Volvo to go hybrid and electric

That's the way to go! Hybrids have fewer parts so cheaper servicing but electric take a long time to charge...

Re: Volvo to go hybrid and electric

A good move to tackle the problem of air pollution but does nothing to stop the increasing number of cars on the road. In the end, it may not matter how they are propelled. They'll be no room for them to go anywhere. Our generation might just about get away with being able to get places in cars. I don't know 20 years into the future though.

Re: Volvo to go hybrid and electric

Are they as environmentally friendly as claimed?

Taken from interwebby thing:

One recent study by scientists in EV-friendly Norway has found that in some circumstances electric cars can have a greater impact on global warming than conventional cars.
One of the authors of the report, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Guillaume Majeau-Bettez, admits that he is shocked and disappointed that their findings are not more positive for EVs.
"The electric car has great potential for improvement, but ultimately what will make it a success or failure from an environmental standpoint is how much we can clean up our electricity grid - both for the electricity you use when you drive your car, and for the electricity used for producing the car."

The study is a life cycle analysis of the global warming impact of the production and operation of EVs, driven for 150,000km (93,750 miles), compared with the production and operation of conventional cars. The scientists include so-called "well to wheel" data, taking into account the energy needed to refine and transport oil into petrol or diesel.
One of the findings is that the energy intensive manufacturing of EVs mean that some cars make almost double the impact on global warming as conventional cars. This is mostly because of the raw materials and energy needed to build the lithium-ion batteries.

they may well be able to change the way cars are powered, but they won't be able to change people the same way to accept them

Re: Volvo to go hybrid and electric

The hybrid Prius has been around for a while and while it saves money in low speed, stop-start city conditions it is not at all economical on the open road.

The other problem is recharging stations for electric cars if you can drive for several hundreds of Km without a servo how are electric cars going to do it?

At the moment, 300 miles is about the limit, but turn the aircon, heater or lights on then the limit is reduced. Not sure whether or not speed is proportional to range
Take reffuelling time - electric cars can't be "filled up" in a couple of minutes

A few people I know (of) have the Nissan beastie here on the Wight. The real killer is depreciation. The Renault is a rental battery jobbie I think?

Re: Volvo to go hybrid and electric

My Prius battery is original and the service manager has only changed one since the ffirst Prius. However, there are specialist firms who will replace cells if you don't want to change the whole battery.
The big advantage of the Toyota hybrid is the software monitors the battery condition and when it reaches a critical low, switches on the Atkins engine seamlessly......Two or three miles up the road, and the indicator shews full battery charge. Fill up with petrol is about five minutes, rather than hours for electric cars?
