I do remember for many years after the war Britons had a reputation as a nation of offal eaters; faggots, liver, lights, kidney and while strictly not offal - mince and sausages - all cheap meat. Sausages - one never knew whether to fry or butter them they contained so much bread.
Undoubtedly not true today but it wasn't far wrong when I was growing up there.
BTW we had mince on toast too.
