Here they put the panels on north or west facing roofs or mount them on angled brackets. There must be an optimum angle and direction, I would guess rhat in the UK south facing and more vertical (compared to here) would be more desirable but I don't know the details..

Yes you are right about the South facing roofs here Bruce, but an angle of thirty'ish degrees is usually about right. Only for a couple of months in winter does the sun drop to below 30 degrees.
