M6 tailbacks

I went to Upton - upon - Severn Blues Festival over the weekend, and drove back on Monday
I noticed long queues of traffic on the southbound lanes of the M6 in Staffordshire
Any one know what caused them?

Everyone heading to the West Country on holiday probably!

I've been told that between Stafford and Birmingham is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in Europe.
Sheer volume of traffic causes tailbacks sometimes

Not just the M6 either, M5, M42, M1, M18 get build up of traffic too, you just have to hope you've missed it or are too early for it.Usually the normal for certain times, plus the odd accident to make it worse. It really is no fun travelling these days.

It's always great fun motorway driving at weekends this time of year. School holidays make things worse.

Re: M6 tailbacks

For years if I have a long distance to travel I have driven at night

For this trip I left home about 2 in the morning and drove steadily, passing through Spaghetti Junction about 5 in the morning; no holdups
I stopped at service stations for a rest & coffee
People I chatted to at the festival said that Spaghetti Junction was very slow with tailbacks during the daytime, and that at one point the M5 was down to one lane, which was probably the cause

Got to Upton about 7-30, before the campsite opened

Hi

I have to go across the M6 tomorrow to get to hospital in Stoke.

Just waiting at the roundabout will take at least 10 to 15 minutes.

I did hear about the Irishman who wanted to go up the M6, He found it so busy he went up the M3 twice instead
