Sunflowers.

I didn't know whether to post this in gardening or photography. This year has been a great year for us for sunflowers. My wife loves them for the look but I especialy like their attraction for the bees.

Re: Sunflowers.

I love sun flowers but they are a sore subject, we planted about 20 and rabbits ate all but one, that has flowered but it's a dark brown colour not the lovely yellow we hoped for. The wabbits ate the good ones !

Yours look lovely I'm very jealous indeed.

Re: Sunflowers.

I didn't mean to make you jealous JulieI didn't even sow these, they just sprang up in the same spot we grew some last year. At the start of the growing season I actually thought about pulling them out before my wife saw them.

Re: Sunflowers.

A couple of things I've tried with slugs Eliza is to take a fairly large plastic plant pot and cut the bottom out of it. Make sure you leave a a nice sharp edge where you have cut. The slugs won't go over that edge, they don't like it. You can sow your seeds and set the pot over them.
Another is to put saw dust around the area you have sown. The slugs don't like going over that either. You just have to watch it doesn't wash or blow away.
Slugs only eat the young plans. As the sunflowers mature the stalk becomes rough and spikey and they won't climb up it.

Re: Sunflowers.

I'm going to try those tips kev with dogs we don't like to use slug pellets and have been feeding the slugs rather a lot this year.

Re: Sunflowers.

We try not to use poisons at all Julie, so I'm always on the look out for alternative ways to combat pests and diseases. If I discover anything new I'll post it.
