Re: When is right to remove a statue?

I'm surprised nobody here mentioned the more recent suggestion that Nelson's column be toppled because he supported slavery :

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/calls-nels...111618587.html

I liken this whole statue saga to the Taliban blowing up Buddhas of Bamiyan or similar. If you don't like a statue move it to a museum. If it's part of the landscape maybe leave it where it is, particularly if nobody has complained for nearly 200 years.

That's because today certain sections of society have an air of grievance.

Re: When is right to remove a statue?

The City of Sydney council has referred to its Indigenous board concerns about a statue inscription claiming Captain James Cook discovered Australia.

The Cook statue in Hyde Park has been criticised for ignoring tens of thousands of years of Indigenous history in Australia. Its inscription reads: “Discovered this territory 1770.”

But councillors have warned against reducing discussion of Aboriginal dispossession to a narrowly focused “culture war”.

Yes, I agree with the councillors Bruce, the thing is whatever was put there would be offensive to someone if not now to future generations. It's the same with things like Nelsons column in London we should just accept these things as part of our history. If we don't where does it stop? Flatten the pyramids maybe ?

If it causes someone to ask, " Who were they and what did they do?" I don't see the harm in having statues of any historical figures.

Re: When is right to remove a statue?

Colston Hall in Bristol is having it's name changed, will anyone know who he was and what he did in the future?
I hope it's not going to become the norm for only good things to be talked about in the history lessons!

I don"t think statues should be removed, they are part of our history , for good or bad.
