More EU meddling

A quote from my garden magazine last week:

"Ride-on mowers, as well as golf buggies and mobility scooters, may have to be covered by insurance under a new EU directive. Mandatory insurance, which could cost up to £100 per year, would apply to mowers being used on private land."

Anyone here use a ride-on mower?

The gardening is the wife's department Mups, she won't let me touch the petrol push mower.
Maybe she's waiting for the chance to get it insured first, wise woman.

Doesn't your household insurance cover public liability claims? You are probably already covered.

Re: More EU meddling

You think that is bad/ have you ever heard of T.U.P.E? It concerns employement laws and workers rights and the main cause of zero contracts.

Sue and I sat down for about an hour and a half with a specialist employment solicitor going through it all when we sold the kennels.

Basically an employer cannot sack an employee unless for a serious misdemeaner such as theft.

An employer can't say to someone your dismissed just like that . infact it is almost impossible to sack any employee now. In our case we handed of staff to the new employer and they have to take them on, wanted or not. Then if they dismiss them we could still have been fined up to £750,000 with ACAS for unfair dismissal. change of ownership does not affect employees rights. if for whatever reason the employee is no longer wanted the employee has to be given a section of T.U.P.E as to what course of action is open to them and the reason why they are no longer required. Usually it is because the business has ceased trading or the owners have died. even then they may object to the dismissal and appeal to ACAS

The zero contract are because under T.UP.E if a person is a temp for laid down time of employement they have to become a p;roper employee , so to avoid that zero contracts have come in to bypass that ruling. Another EEC ruling that has backfired on the employees .

You will never hear a politician mention T.UP.E but only zero contracts and not the reason why.

We had so many pages of T.U.P.E and duplicate parts to be given to employees it would fill a library almost. A real mine field and unless read thouroughly it won't be understood by most people , including us , completely.

Employement law solicitors are really worth their weight in gold. We definately would have messed up big time without ours.

AS an employee i would recommend they looked at T.U.P.E it is a real eye opener.

Nor me but the principle applies to any device including mobility scooters, even bicycles. A lot of household insurance already covers your use of these items against claims.

I think those who ride mobility scooters should have lessons and be insured ..
Ive seen far too many people having accidents on the darn things to think otherwise.

I agree Cass, some round here are reckless, as for mowers on private land unless there is a risk to the public seems a bit harsh, but a typical EU type rule.

TUPE is the only thing protecting many of us, I have been TUPED 8 times and protected each time. With out it wages and conditions would have gone down with each cheaper contractor. Protected our rights and wages and conditions of work.

But back to the OP we have gardeners do the communal gardens and they are already covered by insurance.
