I love acers, and can't stop buying them! But I have found in the past that though they are happy in pots for a few years eventually they need planting out. May be me, though, not giving them what they need in pots…
They should be positioned where they don't get early morning sun but do get sun later in the day.

I suppose it's like most young things, they need good food whilst they're young to make strong plants at maturity.
If you don't mind me saying carol, clay pots looks really nice, but because they are porous, they dry out much quicker than plastic or glazed ceramic ones, so might be an idea to keep an eye out for that when it gets warmer.

Our local Co-op superstore has had perennial plants 3 for £6 I bought three hellebores, black, dark red and pink speckled. They're about £8 in the garden centre.

This is our Acer,picture from last Autumn,its raining so can't take a new one,also a pair of Dunnocks have just built a nest in it.
