Trump is the Commander in Chief of the most powerful military in the world. He can't declare war only Congress can do that but he can tell the military to perform operations/actions which could lead to war. Lately Presidents have been willing to exercise this power.

He is crass and has no charm but what else has he done?
He has just enforced Obamas red line over the use of chemical weapons .
He has recognised Jerusalem as Israels capital which four presidents have promised to do -including Obams but didnt .
After the smooth handsome Obama almost any President would look bad.
