In the end I have bought her rice shaped freshwater pearls.A long string with three colours of pearl, white, pink and a light silver colour that she can twist to make two rows or leave as 1 long row but tie a knot in.
Sorry the photo doesn't do them justice.
I wasn't happy with the box they came in so will go out and find something nicer for her to keep them in. There's an Indian bazaar stall in the market that I've bought lots of Christmas/Birthday presents from before so I'm going to see if I can find a nice carved wooden box and buy some material to line it.
