Australia Day (right or wrong?)

Every year we have this debate about Australia Day or 'Invasion Day'. Currently it is 26th January supposedly when the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Harbour but is it the right date?

The problem is where do you you move it to? 1st January is the logical date because that was the date of federation but it is already a public holiday.

Actually we do need a public holiday in the second half of the year but to celebrate what?

It's difficult when your country was built on such suffering but IMO you have a lot to celebrate you have made a great country out of a wilderness. It's just sad how many were hurt doing it.

I don't have an answer really Bruce it's a dilemma but at some point perhaps the indigenous people could be included and help you make the decision. That to me would be the best people to consult.

It was sad day for the ‘real Australians’ no matter when you ‘celebrate’ it

Arrival of the Tolpuddle Martyrs 17th August.
James Loveless, the two Standfields, Hammett and Brine sailed on the Surry to Sydney, where they arrived on 17 August 1834. George Loveless was delayed due to illness and left later on the William Metcalf to Van Diemen's Land, reaching Hobart on 4 September

While I understand your feeling of guilt over your invasion it was a long time ago here is a different view by an Alice Springs (Aboriginal) councillor Jacinta Price.

No, not feeling guilty. I wasn't around then.
