Rip Off Britain

Hi

I needed an algaecide for my marine aquarium.

Price in the UK £65.77

Price imported from the USA £20.47, the company do post free for orders over £20.

It arrived in 5 days.

It is exactly the same stuff.

I simply cannot see the justification for the price difference.

Re: Rip Off Britain

When I visited family in the USA I was amazed how cheap craft items were compared to here, now I belong to International knitting groups on line and when they post what they've bought in Hobby Lobby, Michael's etc. I can see how we're ripped off here much wider selections of stuff too!
Walmart over there is amazing compared to Asda/Walmart here, they sell so many different brands of just about everything you could want.

I'm not sure why so many things are cheaper when bought from abroad, but they certainly are.

Is it government-imposed taxes?

Is it EU rules?

Is it greedy UK companies?

Why is it only rip-off Britain?

Re: Rip Off Britain

I remember the "Rip-Off Britain" campaign in 2001 - it prompted me to use the internet to import my new car from Germany via Portugal and save 20% on the purchase price. I didn't have to do that for my latest car - I saved 20% by ordering from a remote (i.e. not local) dealer through a broker.

I'm well aware that many things are considerably cheaper in the US (and China) but a 200% markup in the UK seems excessive .....

You are not alone in this. The federal government has now imposed GST on imported goods under $1000 to stop the escape spending because it was so much cheaper to buy things from overseas. This tax imposition starts from 1st July. Bastards!

There is no logical reason for this because the revenue they will collect will not pay for its collection. It is purely because of pressure from the local big retailers like Harvey Norman who were too lazy to set up on line shopping early enough and are now feeling the pinch.

It pre-dates that by quite a few years - all the way back to decimalisation in 1971 when us consumers were conned big time by retailers who 'rounded up' quite considerably.

Re: Rip Off Britain

Even with sales tax (which we often don't see included in the final price) many things are cheaper to buy in the US.

Re: Rip Off Britain

Hi

It is the big companies who are ripping us off.

Malaria Tablets, Boots here in the UK, are £70 per person.

Boots are the biggest Chemist chain in Thailand, same British Company, same medication, £12.

It is a nonsense.
