Importance of word choice in communication

Interesting article in today's Guardian about how important our choice of words is

https://www.theguardian.com/science/...SApp_Otherrods

I'm guilty of using 'just' at times in emails. Not so much in speech, as I am aware it can sound a bit manipulative.

The benefit of asking someone if they would be ' willing' to do something is interesting though. My go to phrase is " I was wondering if you would mind?......."

I'm definitely going to try using 'willing' next time.

Hmm ... perhaps she should set her own words in order first.

What to say If you really want someone to engage with you, use, “Can I speak to you about this?”, rather than “Can we talk
Can I - is asking if you have the ability.
May I - is asking for permission !

I'm a great believer in plain English. Let's face it, why use big words when you can use more felicitous diminutives?

I'm guilty of using "just" too much. Usually I'll spot it and edit my post so it isn't completely vitiated.

Re: Importance of word choice in communication

What annoys me is the constant use of "basically", an unnecessary word imo. Basically.

I do use hold on a lot.
What anyone is meant to hold on to is the question.
