Re: Should education be free?

education is not free it is paid by tax/rate payers. In other words you and me

State-funded schools in England are schools in England which provide education to pupils between the ages of 3 and 18 without charge. Approximately 93% of English schoolchildren attend such schools.[1] These include academy schools, community schools, foundation schools, voluntary aided schools and voluntary controlled schools; a small number are state boarding schools and three are City Technology Colleges. A significant minority are faith schools, which are attached to religious groups, most often the Church of England or the Roman Catholic Church.

All of these are funded through national and local taxation. A number of state-funded secondary schools are specialist schools, receiving extra funding to develop one or more subjects in which the school specialises. State schools may request payment from parents for extracurricular activities such as swimming lessons and field trips, provided these charges are voluntary.

Funny, I thought the rates as such disappeared many years ago?

Re: Should education be free?

Basic school education is, and should remain, paid for from taxation. Further education, which should enhance the recipient's earnings over their lifetime should be paid for by the recipient. Making that investment in their future gives great incentive to proceed with the chosen career path and, like any investment, should provide long term benefits and repay that initial investment many fold.

In a civilised country all education is free to citizens for however long it is required.

Re: Should education be free?

Why would anyone who has had free education to degree level begrudge anyone else that opportunity?
Perhaps those who have benefited from highly paid professions should sponsor students from less well off backgrounds.

Re: Should education be free?

Theres a large number who go to University on Grants , but those Grants are not paid back till you have a certain income to pay it back, and there comes a time when after so many years its wiped clean ..
Many come out of Uni with debt , some never pay it back .
