Re: salt free meals:(

I agree with Meg - fresh herbs and black pepper!

No doubt, in the fullness of time, someone somewhere will come up with 95 reasons why they are also bad for us - until then I will continue to enjoy them.

Re: salt free meals:(

Good post and very informative Realist.
Following my Heart Attack I was advised to give salt a miss so I started using 'Low Salt' I didn't suffer any side effects but researching Heart Attacks and how to prevent them I came across an article that suggested Potassium should be avoided after a Heart Attack. I have always had very low blood pressure and a slow heart beat, all the things that Potassium invokes. Sometimes after returning from a run my blood pressure has dropped very low and I have almost passed out, in fact it was after a run that my heart rate went so slow it stopped. Both Heart Attacks occurred after a run. So something that slows the Heart and lowers blood pressure is not recommended, for me especially.

I've used it to cut down on sodium, since I have high blood pressure. But the problem with it is I end up using twice as much to get the same flavor as I would with an average sprinkling of pure table salt. Sometimes more than twice as much.

I don't really add salt to my food all that much unless it's mashed potatoes or I need a sprinkling on steamed veg to bring out flavors.

I used to think that I could never eat potatoes that weren't cooked in salt water, but you do adjust. I now prefer new potatoes steamed and never put salt on them, and you can fill a jacket potatoes with lots of tasty things, that contain no salt.
My steamer taught me that salt is not necessary, because food retains more of the natural flavours. Also try looking up "salt free recipes" on the internet.
You told me that Mr M is a quiet man... so just remind him to "Be quiet" if he complains.

I love red potatoes. Those are definitely potatoes that don't really need anything added because they have such a wonderful sweet flavor with soft, delicate flesh.
