...and if they were a pensioner it would be $2.50 (£1.25) a day no matter where they went on Citirail (Newcastle to Wollongong and out to the Blue Mountains over 200km in each direction). Even for common folk the maximum cost is $15 per day (£7.50) - that also includes buses and ferries

On long journeys here pensioners tend to travel first class because they get four free state wide train trips a year and so they only pay the difference between Economy and First.

I remember being shocked years many back when I went from London to Folkestone on the train during the Thatcher era and travelled on a filthy train for some exorbitant fee. More recently I went from Macclesfield to London on a Virgin train but could not travel at certain times and was amazed to discover that seats were reserved. The train itself wasn't bad but was still outrageously expensive compared to what I am used to.

Unfortunately you get points for youth and speaking English so we don't get many immigrants from Yorkshire

Actually I don't know what the current rules are other than there is a points system that favours people with a trade, a profession, higher education, youth, money and spoken English.

I knew some English people a couple of years ago who had retired and had obtained a permanent residency visa but they had to return to the UK when the UK currency collapsed against the Aus$ when the latter went above parity with the US$. They would not be much better off now with the $ worth 60p as opposed to 70p then. They got no assistance from the Australian government of course and because they had not worked here for 10 years they received no pension. I didn't know them well enough to know how they got the visa but it must be possible.
