Isn't that one of the reasons we voted to exit the EU.
It was always going to happen and we would have gone down with them, just a matter of time really....

An article from 2014...

UK cannot subsidize this any more, leaving could be a lot more easier but EU will ensure disagreements protract negotiations.

Hi

Yet another example of The Express winding people up with it's unique twist on things.

It is not helping in achieving a reasonable deal in the talks.

Ah, so that's why he's demanding £50 billion from us!

Even if we're soft enough to give him it, where's he going to get the other £150 billion, I wonder?

And our own remainiacs are still trying to prevent us leaving!

It's certainly not easy to follow the facts in the article, but there is an underlying deficit in the accounts. It does appear that the EU has been overly reliant on member states bailing out poor financial planning or unexpected events. But that doesn't give the full picture as to why claims are suddenly increasing or whether that will continue. They do appear to be starting to be more prudent in their accounting.

Interesting reading, particularly the balance sheet... :

I don't believe that's the reason, more likely down to the high contribution the UK makes relative to other countries. Having looked at the accounts, I'd envisage that negotiations will be very challenging. This is bad news for a swift agreement because the other side will want to draw it out for as long as possible. The financial report is also quite interesting :
