In that case, be sure to take a keyboard with you so you can totally eliminate keyboard issues.

Re: Locked out of PC

Friend's computer now up and running !

My diagnosis was correct - she had clicked 'lock' instead of 'shut down'.
JUDD - your instructions worked a treat and sorted it out first go - thank you.

The fact that she had not defragged for over 12 months and had never done a 'disc clean' did not exactly help either. Have gone through her PC like a dose of salts, given it a routine 'housekeeping schedule' and given her a ream of written instructions!

Thank you everyone for your help and advice.

Glad you got it sorted Silver. Did she reset/remember her password?

No - we created a new password for her and, in case it happens again, a master one with me (don't laugh !) as administrator.

Re: Locked out of PC

This doesn't make any sense

The original problem was that you couldn't get into the machine because it wouldn't recognise her password.

So if he machine was locked, how did you get into it to be able to do anything?

Yes, worries me as well.

If you "sign Out" of the account then you, or anyone else can later sign in to whatever account which you, or they, have access to. That's the normal usage.

If you "Lock" instead of "Sign out" - so that you can go to watch the football and come back, the pc will simply take you back to where you left it, with everything running as before, when you "unlock" - from the lock screen.

Whilst providing a second account is still a good idea, for many reasons, I think we'll find that you may not be able to run everything, in that new account, unless the various programmes, & other data, have been copied across to the new account and/or shared with the original.

Just think what would happen if another user could simply log in to a different account and open your data files....!

Anyway, all is now well - the real issue seems to have been forgetting the password!

Re: Locked out of PC

The real issue was her clicking 'lock' instead of 'shut down' and then panicking - trying version after version of her password until the beast was totally confused and refused to operate. Judd's excellent instructions sorted it in no time at all.

Still doesn't make sense.

To have gotten back into the computer you MUST surely have managed to enter the correct password.
