This cat..was very independent..shy..
He came in every day..and when I felt better he never did it again..
My grandfather's dog knew exactly what time he would come in..

They do have very sensitive hearing,[/B] and generally I do take note of it. But there has been many a time when it really has been only a noise they heard on the telly or the like while they were in wake-up mode. It's been more noticeable as they've aged, and their hearing is less acute.

You beat me to it, just what I was going to say too.
I do also believe they see things we don't as well though.

I once worked for a lady with cerebral palsy..
She had adopted a golden labrador who had been rescued from a puppy farm..She was blind and prone to epileptic fits..

When she was feeling strange..she used to ''sniff me out''..scratch my leg..and then have a fit...
