Re: Floydy's All-Time Top 1000 Favourite Albums

Wow! I have had so much catching up to do, I have forgotten the comments I was going to make.

So many excellent albums mentioned. I honestly never realised just how many albums Bowie made.

Great to see Tommy by The Who, particularly Pin Ball wizard which is a joy to listen to through headphones or even in the car as it features true stereo (something sadly lacking these days).

Bat out of hell. I remember bunking off school in 1979, going up to HMV in Oxford street and buying this album which I played so much. I can't believe that it is still around now. I'm guessing it's up there with Thriller and Tubular Bells.

Whilst I like some Billy Joel songs I couldn't justify placing him that high up. Different tastes, perhaps, but to me he's always been a poor man's Elton John.

Thanks Longdogs
I got Bat Out Of Hell in 1981, one of the first albums I ever bought after buying the 7" single (which was terrible edited). I never tire of that record.

As you say mate, different tastes.
I much prefer Billy Joel myself and find him more talented as an all-round singer-songwriter, probably equally as good on the piano though. Plus, Billy writes lyrics too, something that Elton gets outside help for.

He's done nothing, though, since 1993 unless you count that classical album; I wonder why he just stopped.

According to an excellent biography by Fred Schuers which I highly recommend, I believe he was simply tired of going to the studio and all the recording process. He still does concerts but it's a shame we don't see more of his songwriting these days.

Re: Floydy's All-Time Top 1000 Favourite Albums

Still following along too and trying to catch up. There are some real gems here, and some that I had forgotten. Surprisingly, there are some groups I don't recognize - and I thought I had fairly broad and eclectic music tastes. All those years in California had a heavy influence on my popular music tastes.

Ffosse, I will take both Joel and John. One of the best concerts I ever saw was the two of them together, and at the end of the day, I am not sure I could say that I preferred one over the other.

While I don't think I have the discipline to do a top 1,000, I think I might just give a go at a top 20...

Thanks, Floydy.

Whilst I know you are very cued up on music, Surfermom, it's probably a lot to with the rate that British music changes and advances. It's always been that way, we don't stand still here too long before the next phase or movement happens.
That's a good thing though and it means we are constantly being rewarded with new music, unless you go by the pop charts which are truly awful these days.

I'd urge you not to compile your top 1000 lol as it's just about finished this weary author off. But I think you should all submit your top twenties in here after the number one album shows its face.
I won't be rushing at all now as we're almost in the final 20, but it looks like the list could be completed by the end of this month.

Thanks for your support though, S'mom. It's always good to converse with you in here as it is elsewhere on the forum

Re: Floydy's All-Time Top 1000 Favourite Albums

Any room for Blue by Joni Mitchell? Or have I missed it? A top 1000 by me would include a few Joni albums.

Then again, if I did a top 1000 it would probably be skewed more towards folk and alternative country. As well as Led Zep, the Who (Who's Next?) and more singer songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Josh Ritter.

It must have been an incredible amount of work you've put into this. First, separating the 1000 from the other 7 or 8000 albums you own, then deciding which order to place the rest. And you've admitted that you've made mistakes (Ryan Adams). Still, a top 1000 can never really be definitive as you remember old records and perhaps find some new ones.

I tend to listen to 4 hours of music a day (not including music in the background) and I split this up into two 2 hour sessions in the morning and the evening. I listen with really good headphones via my Google Music app and I listen intently and critically - especially the new songs. I perhaps listen to 15 new (to me) songs every day, and the other 45 are older favourites. That's how I discover new music - some of it will be forgotten as I don't like it, but others will and have gone on to become favourites with me. I then add these songs to a playlist and, when I've got the time, I'll look up the album(s) and give them a listen.

Of course you can never listen to everything - there simply isn't the time. Have you worked out how long it would take to listen to your top 1000 non-stop? I have playlists that are 80 hours long (I never get through them all, just put them on shuffle). Say an average album is 40 minutes long, times 1000 is a long time. I'd bet that you don't spend much time with the 7000 albums you discarded.
