Re: I am all worn out

Lindyloo, that is so kind of you to tell me about that place, thank you.

I love Cornwall, and would live permanently there in a flash if I could. I used to go, and strangely, always felt I belonged there.
I visualised spending my retirement there, but it wasn't to be.

The only thing that puts me off is the distance. It is a long, long way and I wouldn't have a clue how to do that journey on my own. It is hundreds of miles for the dogs to travel too. Too far I'm afraid.

Things have changed now, and I have decided I am going to stay put and hope we can all work round each other, but once again, thank you very much for trying to help.

You see, I want some other jobs doing too, like decorating my hallway and re-laying part of the patio, so I will have to wait and see.
A while back I had new windows put in but never did the kitchen windows or back door until this business was sorted out, so when they are finished and gone, I need to get that last bit of glazing done too.
I expect I shall be broke by then, so I might have to do without the kitchen units.
Mups, The reason, l asked if you were having new kitchen units, was because the labour to re-fit your old kitchen will be included in your insurance claim. I therefore thought, if you had new kitchen units to fit, it would save you the cost of labour of fitting a new kitchen in the future.
Sorry, to have landed this on you, whilst you have enough to think about!

Don't think they would entertain new units as part of the claim, Art. They are not re-fitting my kitchen as such, just repairing damage to walls and floors, re-screeding and levelling the floor, laying new flooring, and re-papering and painting walls and ceiling.

They are charging me to do a small job on the kitchen ceiling, because they said it is not caused by the subsidence, so I am pretty sure they would say although the units are old, they are not damaged by the subsidence, and so would not be included in claim.

I can ask, but I think I'd be pushing my luck.
Oh, just had a thought. . . did you mean me buy the units and let them fit them in instead of putting the old ones back? Is that what you meant?

Otherwise what I might get my carpenter friend to put some new fronts on instead. Can't think that far ahead at the mo.

Yes, that's what l meant. I thought if they fitted some new kitchen units instead of the existing ones, it would save you paying for labour in the future.
It wouldn't be any skin off their nose as they were having to re-fit your existing units anyway!

Re: I am all worn out

It's worth a try Mups. Quite some years ago contractors painting the outside here were a bit too heavy with the paint brush, and paint splattered onto my car and that of a neighbour. It affected a wing and the bonnet. So what did one of the idiot workers do to clean it off? He tried to scrub it off, and left even further damage, ie too many scratch marks! So I claimed from their insurers, and they agreed to respray the bonnet. However, because the wing was rust damaged I got a repair done. And so I cheekily asked for the other wing to be repaired too, which hadn't suffered paint damage. They did it!

Well. You don't ask, you don't get!

The neighbour moved out soon after, I think, and I don't think she bothered with her own car.

Mine was my beloved silver Ford Escort Ghia, which unfortunately succumbed to a lot of rust!!

Not much I can add Mups I'm afraid, just to say I hope they get the job done properly this time, and the only advice I can give is to resist all hints or badgering for cups of tea.
If you do feel that you have to offer them tea then a maximum of twice a day, perhaps mid morning and mid afternoon but never first thing before they start, and never ever offer biscuits with the tea otherwise you will never ever be rid of them...

Thanks Barry I don't think there will be too many cups of tea though because I will have no kitchen to brew up in, no sink to wash their cups in, and I will be banished from that room anyway. Lol

Re: I am all worn out

This is so difficult for anyone, but you will survive.
Start singing Mups.

If you have a hall , your doggies can have the run of that, put a nice comfy chair in your bedroom, a 'teas made' and a mini fridge. If you have a laptop you can watch tv on that or just chat to people on here to pass the hours away in the evening.
Maybe a pub near bye where you can have a lunch or a bowl of soup. They may even do food for you to take away (worth asking) Get someone to bring you fish and chips another couple of nights. Order a Chinese or similar online and they will deliver it to you.
A few bottles of wine, and chocolates !
Pretend you are living in a caravan you'll be fine until the work is finished. Shut as many rooms off as possible, cover everything with dust sheets or what you can, the dust will keep appearing later.
Times like this, we have to let certain standards slide , but you really will be ok Mups, honestly you will. All nice and new for Christmas...
