Re: France is right to ban the Burkini

Ladies, ladies. Don't fall out.

I think you're both lovely and very nice people.

God, if I were a muslim and had the good fortune to be married to you both...

...in fact, perhaps being a muslim might have its disadvantages too.

Rhian when did you last see a nun in a habit?
Even nuns have moved on they usually wear modest ordinary dress.
As for the rest they simply won't be on a beach.
If you live in an Islamic country in the middle east you will see many families at the beach. The men and boys wear trunks or shorts the women and girls wear heavy cover up in soaring heat.
The implication and reality is quite clear if you dont cover up you will be considered a whore and subject to all sorts of humiliating behaviour .
There is no choice in the matter.
They cannot wear anything else.
In France there is a choice - choose to obey the authorities or not.
If you choose to live in a secular country you obey their rules.
Cant have your cake and eat it ( or at least whine about it)

Re: France is right to ban the Burkini

There not a lot of difference between a wetsuit and a Burkini but IMO its the implication that gets up everyones nose
The implication being that 'modest' women dont wear ordinary swimwear .
Ie the other lot are not modest and are asking for ( unwelcome) attention from men.

@Muddy re: post #82
The third from last statement is contradictory
What is the point you're making?

Do all western holidaymakers in islamic countries cover up?

Re: France is right to ban the Burkini

Depends on the country.
Malaysia is OK generally - but the middle east is very different
Holidays makers will generally stay on the hotel beaches which are fenced off.
(You will find local men on the other side of the fence trying to ogle women in swimwear.)

Just about everyone who advocates cover up.
'Modesty' is a big deal - in women - although the koran itself advises modest dress for both sexes.
In some parts of Malaysia where this ruling is strict the football players wear black tights under their shorts when playing football.

And how many advocate the rule in France?

Re: France is right to ban the Burkini

Rhian thats whats all the fuss is about .
There is no such rule in France the country is secular.
They consider rightly or wrongly that those wearing the burkini are making a political statement - basically two fingers to French law.

Edited to add
Of course the Muslim community advocate cover up for women
Its an unfortunate cultural tradition coming from the middle east.

Strange that a Secular country can be so beholden to Catholicism that they don't even open shops on a Sunday
