Re: Hoverflies.

I know I'm going off topic a bit here...
But I heard recently that they've finally found out what is killing bees
It's a chemical in a pesticide some farmers have used. It is now banned and hopefully bee numbers will start to increase again.

At a completely different time my eldest son saw on the internet about the decline in numbers and he read aloud... "if bees disappeared from our planet completely human beings would only survive for another 4 years after they had gone"

I suppose that's true of all the little pollinators out there isn't it?

Rhian do you mean the 'neonicotinoids', the damage they cause has been suspected for many years but there was a reluctance to do anything about it .

Yes I would say that is true and Hoverflies perform a valuable job of pollinating and eating aphids.

I can't remember what they were called Meg but that sounds familiar
If they had suspicions why has it taken so long for them to be banned?

....Hi Rhian because for some farmers it would mean smaller crops and therefore profits .

Also many neonicotinoids are produced by the multinational pharmaceutical companies like Bayer and Monsanto , they can afford big budgets to fund extensive advertising extolling the virtues of their products. It is not so easy to get funding to prove that something is harmful.
