The fairly old and new.

This is the old Police Station situated just inside Portsmouth Dockyard at Vernon Gate. I read it was originally a guard house built in 1922. Behind that can be seen the lower floors of No.1 Gunwharf Quays, the south coast's highest skyscraper at 29 storeys and almost 100 metres high (must get a photo of that on the next visit). The gate itself is 1870's (I think)

Interesting Mart.

I like the idea of mixing the old and the new, I think it works well.

Probably quite an ordinary scene but I thought there are 3 ages in the shot. 1800's - 1900's - 2000's

Re: The fairly old and new.

The gate seems to have been rendered useless by sticking hideous bollards in the way.

Re: The fairly old and new.

I don't know if that gate ever gets used as anything other than a pedestrian walkway these days. Maybe the bollards are removable if necessary. Gunwharf Quays is no longer a dockyard. This part of Portsmouth Harbour has an Isle of Wight ferry terminal, private moorings, a residential area, a pedestrian only shopping precinct and recreational area. Some of the older buildings have been preserved.

Before the area was used as described, the gate was the entrance to the Naval Torpedo School, which was named HMS Vernon. Not needed for that now of course but it's just one of the structures that has been kept, along with much of the original wall.

I do generally but I am glad that some old features are incorporated into new designs and not just pulled down.

Another visit to Portsmouth Harbour and a few more photos:

An original crane preserved in the modernised Gunwharf Quays:

The Old Custom House is now a pub and restaurant. The Spinnaker is in the background:
