What planet do these people live on???

According to the tories children must make room for their elderly relatives, so all of you here with children had better warn them that you're about to descend on them. Good 'ere innit????

Same planet I do on this question UJ, we had Nan and Granddad come to us when they needed care, then when we had Tasha as a baby we had Dad then Mum come to us to be cared for. For us it was a no brainer they were in need we wanted to help and we could put Tasha's cot either in corner of our room or later in the living room. We had it work in a small 2 bedroom flat.

How does that work - one minute asking people to downsize, then imposing bedroom tax - quackers they are - the lot of 'em

Yes, it was normal of course when we were young, having a grandmother or a great-aunt living with us (and being shared among the family like peripatetic monarchs, and of course being entitled to the best room etc.). I can't see any of the next generation putting up with me, even if they have the space.

Re: What planet do these people live on???

Social care minister Alistair Burt says that in future the state won't be able to care for the elderly to the same extent it does now, and several generations will need to live together in larger homes.
That used to be the case years ago members of my family had three generations living together, it worked very well. If you have room why not care for an elderly parent, I would have loved to have my Dad living with me had he survived my stepmother.

His comments, in an interview with the Guardian, follow a speech to the Conservative party conference by Jeremy Hunt in which the health secretary said that in future there won't be enough care home places for the UK's ageing population.

Councils have been cutting back on funding, giving help only to the most frail. People with more than £23,500 in savings - or with a house worth more than this - aren't usually eligible.

And while there are plans to limit the amount a person has to pay to £72,000 in total, David Cameron recently announced that this won't come in until 2020, rather than next year as originally planned.
With a rapidly increasing elderly population bringing a sharp rise in people with dementia needing full time care something has to give.
Many families fitting a certain criteria already subsidise the care of family members. In some nursing homes those who are on benefits get free care while others are paid for by their family until their assets fall to a certain level. So nothing new there.

I fully expect to sell my house to pay for nursing home care should I need it. I am also pretty sure my son and DIL would make room for me if necessary.

What a good idea!
Especially with many having to clear out of their home because of having an extra bedroom. So obviously the answer then is to put mum and dad or auntie out in the shed, soon pop off in the freezing cold, problem solved. Q.E.D.

Re: What planet do these people live on???

Then comes the "his parents, her parents", who will it be? The divorce rate is high now it could go much higher if families are forced into a position of having parents living with them. Not all families get along well and as we all know I´m sure, there are many people who have never had a chance at living their own lives because of taking care of a parent. I´m sure it can work very well for those who have "granny flats" but for families with children and families were both parents have to work, or daughter in laws and son in laws who have to put up with such a situation, no it won´t work.
I personally would not wish myself on my son and daughter in law, no matter what state of health I was in, I´ve had my life and they are entitled to theirs.

Even with a parent you don't get on well with taking care of them I found gave us a chance at the end of their lives to put things right and get closer.. It was hard work looking after them but I got so much out of it I would do it again in a heart beat. I always say I wouldn't expect the kids to look after us but if they offered I would be immensely proud of them and would hope to be of help to them and not just a burden.

Good heavens, that would have the UK living like the rest of the planet.

Me-thinks some people think benefits grow on trees and have enjoyed to much of the good life in the few years they have been available thanks to the last generation.

Ironic that the same people want to chuck them all down the drain by incurring and giving away unsustainable further expense .

Quite agree Julie...it's called 'responsibility' some people think that they should have none to their parents, grandparents or children !
They seem to think that everything is the responsibility of 'The State' .... I think that is a fundamental difference between Conservative thinking and Socialist misconception.
