Would it be because they can't sedate her and scan her?
I have heard that Panda mums to be have the ability to put their pregnancies into a sort of suspended animation, for want of a better phrase, and can delay giving birth until the best possible conditions occur.

Pregnancy can last anything from 90 to 160 days, the average being 135 days.
