Podiatry yesterday.

After my assessment on Wednesday which made me have to cancel my podiatry appointment, i visited with a photo of my foot which is just not healing.

When i got out of hospital last year in late October i have been dressing the wound myself, it was very deep and initially made decent progress, but since Christmas its hardly healed at all.

So i had a talk with the podiatrist and explained im unhappy with the slow progress, and all they do is the same as i do myself at home.

So we agreed to try Iodine dressings rather than the Falmminol i use now, and im also going to use an old fashioned way of healing wounds bathing it in salty water

To think a paper cut led to gangrene and amputation of toes and part of my foot. This in turn has badly affected my balance, ive had several falls two of which saw me back in hospital once with pre hyperthermia.

I still cant get an answer from the experts as to wether i will be able to walk properly again or how long before the wound heals, very frustrating.

Oh dear Nom, you are going through it! What does your GP say? I got mine to send me to a different hospital and consultant when I had my tummy trouble. The new consultant sorted me out within a few months.
I hope you get some help and support soon.

Nom matey, the medication you've been prescribed is, as you say, is not working - might I suggest an alternative - had an infection on my foot couple of years ago - was advised to soak foot in warm water with some tea tree oil - it worked, infection very quickly cleared.

From what Nom has said re. gangrene and amputated toes, there is an underlying cause for the infection not healing.

Re: Podiatry yesterday.

Nom, I am so sorry for your ongoing troubles.
You say you told them there has been hardly any improvement since Christmas, but what I don't understand is, why did you need to tell them that, aren't they monitoring it themselves?
Why has this been allowed to continue for 5 flippin' months before trying a different type of dressing?
I am concerned it may get re-infected and worsen again if they don't keep tabs on it.

I realise I don't know the whole story, but surely if any wound is not healing you shouldn't be 'seeing to it yourself' in the first place. Is it that no one monitoring your foot - or won't you let them?

I could say so much but you will only tell me off, so all I will say is please get regular checkups and insist it is monitored, before it worsens.
I hope it improves quickly with the new dressings and the salt soaks, but if it doesn't, you need to go back sooner rather than later.

Re: Podiatry yesterday.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Mt physiotherapy occurred in hospital, two walks down the corridor and back, accompanied by a physioterrorist.

Ive heard about Tea Tree oil, and will explore it further.

I had traces of something in the bone that had them concerned, to the point it may need further amputation, but after an MRI scan they said they could ind no trace. This was Febuary.

They did try both Silver and Iodine dressings Mups, i keep the wound clean and change the dressings as well as going to my diabetic podiatrist. I also know the signs to look for in case of infection as i had them all several times last year. I guess i thought i would have been back to walking normally by now.

As im diabetic i dont heal as well as i used too, just have to be patient.

Re: Podiatry yesterday.

OK Nom, I remember you've said before about being diabetic, and obviously you know a lot more about it than I do, I was just concerned about the length of time it was taking to heal.
Glad they are keeping an eye on it though, and fingers crossed the new dressings will sort things out better.

Nom are you under the care of Diabetic Specialist Nurses. If so you you must contact them regarding your foot. Best policy make yourself a nuisance. Most hospitals provide this facility.
