Sorry to hear that, RS, and it is something I dread for myself.
I have a small area of loss of vision in my right eye close to, but fortunately not exactly on, the centre of vision. I have been attending the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital for two or three years now and, fortunately, it appears that it is not getting worse.
I have also been warned that I predispose to vitreous detachment and/or retinal detachment or tear. I also have a couple of small cataracts in my left eye but, as others have said, if these become problematic they can be removed and the lens replaced by a plastic prosthetic.
I just thank Allah that I still have quite good vision and hope that this remains so for as long as possible.
A long time ago, when I was in the RAF, the MO (running a course for some of us) posed the philosophical question, 'If you had to completely lose one of your senses, sight or hearing, which would you choose to lose as being the least important?' He insisted that his choice would be sight. I disagreed and went for hearing (as it happens, I have some loss of hearing now!) as I would feel far more disabled if I were completely blind than if I were completely deaf.
An interesting discussion point, I feel.
I'd just add that I'm rather surprised that there are quite a number of other members here who are also suffering some form of sight problems.
It must be our age!
