Absolutely do NOT take aspirin if you think you are having a stroke!! It is true that it is advised for a heart attack but depending on the cause of the stroke it could make things worse.
Knew I had read it somewhere about giving aspirin, it is aspirin for me it would be my best chance of survival at 77+

I agree....if the person is suffering a hemorrhagic stroke, then thinning the blood by giving aspirin is absolutely the wrong thing to do and the outcome potentially catastrophic.

Re: Tia

It never occurred to me we should give anything the medics didn't offer, in cases like this just getting to the source of help is best I would have thought.

Absolutely, but it is that magic hour that is important for survival.
I have always believe doing something is better than doing nothing, you did the tight thing Julie, I think if I am on my own I shall risk taking an aspirin.
It's worse these days with ambulances taking longer to get to you, thats if you can ring for one.

If you ring for one the staff you speak to will advise, best do what they say wrinkly rather than risk taking something may make it worse.

Re: Tia

May I ask what the symptoms were that Julie recognised? They've done plenty of adverts about stroke symptoms but are they different to those of a TIA? My friend had one years ago and lost her sight, which meant prompt treatment (yes, it was aspirin). Her sight did come back again, thankfully.

He was confused and getting his words mixed up, when askimg for a glass of water it came out as cup of cement. Only lasted a few minutes and he was back to normal but it was obvious to me something had happened.

Always ask for medical advise if possible for anything regarding sudden illness, but sometimes not always possible.

Not when 'doing something' could worsen the situation or even cause death.

In the early stages of a TIA, it's not possible to tell whether the person is having a TIA or a full stroke, and depending on the type of stroke i.e [B stroke caused by bleeding in or around the brain[/B] or stroke caused by a blockage or clot.

In the former, giving an asprin could worsen the bleed leading to death.
