Re: Prostate cancer

I have just measured my waist, and it is 34. The most it has been was 36. Yet 8 years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
I was lucky or maybe fortunate that it was confined to just the prostate.
I had it removed, and I still have yearly blood tests and as my specialist says I am cured.
Recently my friend was diagnosed with it, and he is large. He also wanted it removed as he had heard so many stories of people that had alternative therapys, that did not survive.
He was told that he would have to loose weight if he wanted it removed, as with his also heart condition, he could die on the operating table.
Well he did manage to loose 3 stone, and they went ahead with the removal, and he is clear now.

Re: Prostate cancer

So strange that so many are affected by it. I know at least a dozen blokes who either have been diagnosed with it or have died from it. I don't recall hearing about prostate cancer in my youth, is it a 21st century disease and if so why? Or is it that it wasn't picked up on before? I suppose the symptoms are so vague and don't seem serious until it's too late. I was checked out about five years ago (the investigative finger) and found to be okay, but I do have to visit the toilet a few times during the night. Slightly worrying if I let it.

Bob it isn't just prostate cancer that is on the increase, it is all cancers, so I suspect our life styles are causing this and I think stress and maybe some food production techniques are causing it.
I don't want to worry you but I was also checked out, a year before my cancer was found, so as cancer can develop so quickly, a check 5 years ago means nothing. Going for a pee in the night can be caused by many things like, diabetes, bladder infections, cancer or maybe just drinking too much in the evening.. What I am saying is if you are noticing too many late night pees, get it checked out. Your doctor would prefer you to be a nuisance, than a cancer patient.
Please be safe rather than sorry

I hope that continues to be the case for many many years to come.

I suppose this waistline thing is only a trend that has been noticed and not the rule. Probably lots of men with waistlines over 37" who won't get prostate cancer.

Regarding cancer in general: Mine was over 30 years ago (kidney removed). OK, there's a tumour on the remaining kidney now but all that life after original the op eh? Just shows that cancer isn't always fatal ..although I thought it was going to be 'curtains' at the time.

One thing I have heard is that tumours grow more slowly in older people. This seems to be the case for me. No increase in size in the last 3 scans. It's beginning to look like something else will see me off before the tumour does. In view of this, there could be cases like Older git says. 'Many males die with prostate cancer-but not because of it'. Perhaps this applies to other cancers too.

In view of my bike riding, this is a distinct possibility for me.

Re: Prostate cancer

Father and grandfather had it, so there would be a good chance I'd get it too and I did. Caught it early though, decided on surgery and 4 years later PSA is still zero. Fingers crossed.

my dad used to get up numerous times during the night for a wee and so eventually got it checked out - in his case it was prostate cancer - he had an op and that gave him a few more months in which he came for a holiday to me up here in London and he had a great time with my daughter who was only a toddler then but then he gradually went downhill managed to celebrate a ruby wedding anniversary with my mum but died shortly after. I always tell my male friends that if they get up many times in the night to go and get it checked out

Re: Prostate cancer

Well done Ploppy, and thank you Welshie!
I would rather people wasted doctors time establishing that they haven't got cancer than taking a risk and finding out they have!
