Diabetes ; suitable diets

Sorry about thread title, but didn't know how else to catch Nom's eye to tell him about this.

I like this man, Dr.Mosley. I watched him talk on numerous occasions and I like the way he tests things on himself.
He doesn't just stand there spouting and telling people what to do, he actually tries it out on his own body.
This morning he was talking about type 2 diabetes because he was diagnosed with this and has got rid of it himself. He says he can't say he is 'cured' because if he puts on weight he things it might come back again.
He said he was slim man, but realised although he was not overweight he was still carrying too much internal fat - slim outside, fat inside.
I won't go on about everything he said, it's too long winded and I don't want to tell you wrongly either, but I found it interesting. He has written a book about how/what to eat
to greatly assist diabetics.

I hope you are not offended Nom, but I have put a link here (if it works) that explains more if you were interested.
Just thought if it helps, it can only be good.

Re: Diabetes ; suitable diets

This may be useful to many diabetics Mups and I also think that it could be good for everybody, even if they just use it to lose a few pounds. The Mediterranean diet has been known to be healthy for years, but a lot of our eating habits come from the States where foods are often processed and come in too large portions!
I don't think I will stick to the recipes but I have a good idea of what you can eat so I think I will try it too.
Just think Nom, if you wanted to try it you could come here for a week and I will do all the cooking..... providing you make sure I don't sneakily eat a chunk of crusty bread.

My apologies Twink, you are quite right, it should be for everybody, not just Nom, I'm sorry.
It was just that Nom sprang to mind when Dr. Mosley was talking about his own diabetes this morning and I found it very interesting that he had actual proof the dietry change worked for him. X

Oh don't worry Mups I know Nom gets a bit of favoritism from you

I have been battling with the Diabetes experts for years. Around 35 years ago they changed the dietary advice from low carbs with high protein and veg to high carbs and low fat. There are too many experts who don't live with the disease but think they know it all... so if Dr Mosely is right he will become one of my heroes, as I have challenged pharmaceutical companies, specialist docs and nurses and hospitals on this idea.

Re: Diabetes ; suitable diets

Thanks Mups i well schooled in diabetes and the many claims that abound but every diabetic is different and will progress differently. Sorry Malcolm but current figures put 20% of T " diabetics are normal or underweight at time of diagnosis so im afraid its not one size fits all.

You cant cure Diabetes but you can control it, and that control will differ for each individual. Each T2 pancreas will perform differently, as they are still part active. in some way a T1 diabetic knows that there pancreas does not produce the insulin reqd so they inject what is reqd based on their requirements. This si a siplified explanation to a common problem

My first consultant told me on my original visit after diagnosis, "that i wont get better i would only get worse". A very honest statement i believe.

That may be so in your case Malcolm, but please note I stated that Mosley said he was NOT overweight.
I listened to what the man was saying, and it was both surprising and interesting.
