I may have missed some information, but why did the nurse involved refuse to perform a colonic irrigation?

Also, who prescribed the colonic irrigation?

The obvious question, then, is who was most qualified to decide on whether or not the colonic irrigation should be done?

(The other question I should like answering is why do I keep seeing a squiggly red underline under the word 'colonic'? Look, it's done it yet again!)

Re: Colonic Irrigation

The problem seems to be private doctors can suggest anything they want but NHS doesn't always provide the procedures. I'm puzzled if a private doctor prescribed why they didn't do the procedure ? If it were necessary then surely worth having it done by them.

NHS is struggling I can see why they can't provide everything.

I suspect that, like many people including myself, the patient paid for an initial private consultation but didn't want, or couldn't afford to pay for further private work.

I can see that but it's impossible for NHS to support private practices when they prescribe things NHS don't do.

I'd have thought that the NHS do perform colonic irrigation, or at least they used to do.

Perhaps it's one of their cut-backs.

NHS used to do many things they don't any more. But things like colonic irrigation and enemas are not used much these days from my research. Where years ago a pint or two of liquid was used now a chemical tiny amount in a suppository is used.

Re: Colonic Irrigation

My friend first went to a hospital suffering from bloating & wind, they didnt/couldnt do anything to help her so she went private , she had tests /scans and the consultant decided she needed a colonic Irrigation ,he also has an NHS clinic so when my friend said she couldnt afford more private treatment he agreed to see her on the NHS, said he was referring her to his collegue ,a nurse who worked with him , who would doe this colonic irregation, but when my friend saw this nurse she was told by her that she would not do this procedure as it was too drastic, and told my friend to use these supposetrys every morning for 2 months, only my friend has got worse and, with my urging her , she got back to the nurse again, now she's been told to do this procedure herself at home , but if it doesnt work it will mean an op and a bag.I feel so sorry for her , she is like a younger sister to me ,not only is she having to deal with this problem but she also has a slipped disc and is due to have an op to repair this in June,so she wants to get this bowel poblem cleared before then

Re: Colonic Irrigation

This sounds like a little more serious than bloating .
A colonic is not that drastic unless it goes wrong and there are plenty of private prctioners about.
Between colonics and a colonoscopy there must be other treatments .

Re: Colonic Irrigation

I have since researched the matter and, to be honest, it is now generally regarded as being not very advantageous as a means of treatment.

It may, though, still be done sometimes to clear the bowel in preparation for investigative procedures, such as a barium enema or endoscopy for example.
