Buddlias

Just wondered as we already have a few purple ones around te caravan if the different coloured ones attract butterflies like the purple. We put in a yellow, pinched a bit from another bush and it's taken well and we are keen to get one of the other redder ones too but not if they don't attract the butterflies as we would have to get rid of a purple to make room.

Attracting the insects is most important to us more than getting the plant we want so want to make the right choice for them.

Also can we cut them right back ? Will they grow up again ? As one is getting a bit too big for its place in the border if it gets much bigger it will cause our neighbour problems and we don't want to do that.

Re: Buddlias

The white ones seem to attract most butterflies for some reason! I've never seen a yellow one though.
Don' t forget to deadhead them, they scatter seeds like mad and they'll pop up everywhere.

Re: Buddlias

Thanks we will cut them down then as they are beautiful but getting rather too big for their boots.

Yellow is supposed to be quite rare we've been told but it doesn't seem to attract the insects and has balls of flowers instead of the normal spires. Tbh I'm not as keen on it as I am the spires.

I have white one Julie, which the butterflies seem to like, I gave found it flowers earlier than the purple one I have. I tend to cut right back at the end of flowering about 4 to 6" above ground level and trim/prune during the summer to keep it attractive.

Re: Buddlias

Here you are Julie. This explains fully what to do, although it is much the same as Frankie and Dongle has said.

I have got pale Pink, Purple and White ones bought earlier this year.

I agree, I have never seen a yellow variety, but I keep the seed heads on for the birds.
