In the unlikely event that we have a second Brexit referendum, it will be because the UK government wills it.
What goes on behind closed doors is anybody's guess.

I'm sure it was the Irish government that insisted on repeat referenda, but who persuaded them to do so?

The Irish government wanted to remain; the EU wanted them to remain: it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to work that out.

(It’s a bit old hat now and a lot of a yawn to use the term Grauniad)
It certainly is "old hat" and anyone that thinks the BBC is left wing should try watching it nowadays, it is very much part of the establishment now.

Re: Brexit Talks New Agenda.

Ireland didn't have a referendum on leaving the EU but to amend Ireland's constitution so that they could accept the treaty. The Irish population voted against because they were not happy with some of the terms. The EU amended the treaty. The Irish then had a second referendum following changes to the treaty.

How is this in any way similar to our situation?

What are you talking about? The Irish referendum which was repeated wasn't about whether they should stay in the EU or not.

Sometimes I wonder whether people ever read below the headlines which are often misleading because they're phrased to be sensationalist.

Edited to say that I've just noticed that Anniesland has made the same point.
