Alaska

I am thinking of going to Alaska next year.
Has anyone been there?

Thanks in advance.

No Sweetie darlin' I haven't, but I've been to Siberia (in January) so I would imagine the cold would be similar, if you are going during a winter period then there are some things I can advise you on.

No not in Winter Joe.
Very interesting about you in Siberia mind.
We will have to wait until The Candy Bar is open again, then I want to know about your travels. I am excited now.

Re: Alaska

I went on a Canadian Rockies tour and Alaska cruise three years and it was wonderful. I’d love to go back and see more of both countries.

I went in the last half of June and the weather wasn’t cold at all and I rarely needed more than a light waterproof. Some of the port stops were much more humid than I’d expected.

I had a wonderful time. Whale spotting in Juneau, float plane flying over the wilderness in Ketchikan, riding the old train following the path of the Klondike trail in Skagway and glacier watching in Glacier Bay. I recommend it.

Thank-you I want to go even more now.
Do you have any pics?
You can post them on this thread.
I thought maybe no-one had been there.
I want to see the hot geezers and go swimming in them.
It would be a very different kind of holiday.

I have loads of photos but not where I can easily get at them at the moment. I’ll see if I have any on this iPad and post them for you.

Re: Alaska

I would think the first thing you need to decide upon is whether you are an adventurous type or if you require the luxury of tours like the cruise ship tours.

If you like adventure and if you want to have the thrill of seeing large bears in their native habitat, then may I suggest you make arrangements to go to McNeil River Falls (July and August). You would see bears fishing for salmon, often in quite large numbers, perhaps as many as 75 bears congregated in one spot and competing for the best fishing spots. Tourists are allowed to get within just 15 meters of the bears but not to worry. No-one has ever been hurt by the bears. Simply do what the park ranger says.

I believe that watching permits are now required, so you should make advance arrangements. McNeil River is only about 320 Km from Anchorage

Re: Alaska

I’m a bit on the adventurous side myself Bakerman in so far as I arrange all my outings myself rather than go on the ship’s excursions. I travel solo and am always happy to have the safety and comfort of the ship to come back to.
