Dont know whats right/wrong

As I have been having treatment for Cancer Ive been told by the Cancer hospital that I must not have the flu jab.Yet my own G.P surgery says it is OK to have. I am leaving it up to them to argue out & let me know.,but I do worry not having the jab as I'm asthmatic & prone to chest infections.
Is anyone else not able to have the flu jab,if so how do you feel about it ?

I would say yes you must have it, cancer can weaken the immune system which puts you at greater risk of getting flu etc, etc. So I certainly thing you must have it. your Doctor is the one that I would take notice of

I was told by my GP and oncologist it was vital, my immune system can't be expected to fight off flu while I'm being treated, I had the pneumonia one too.

Re: Dont know whats right/wrong

I was advised to have it both last and this year because of my cancer. My immune system was too weak to fight flu.

You need to discuss it with your cancer specialists and tell them exactly what your GP has told you.

They need to know you've had two totally conflicting pieces of advice...and your GP needs to know this too.

Edited...sorry, just re read your post and I think this is what you've done!!

Both sources need to know what the other has told you.

I would see what each one says when you confront them before taking it further.

Vent your anger on here certainly, but don't let the forum decide!!

Yes don't do what I've been advised make sure you get your own medical advisors advise because we both have cancer but may have very different types or treatments.

Absolutely agree with Ruthio here.
None of us know enough about your treatment/medication/or medical history, it would be irresponsible - and possibly dangerous even - to advise you Deylon.
Even others who have had treatments will not be identical to your case.

Maybe because of your treatment the flu/pneumonia vacc. could hit you harder than a healthier person, but I don't know.

I think it is appalling you have been given such contradicting advice by the medics, insist they sort it out once and for all.

Good luck.

Re: Dont know whats right/wrong

When I knew I was going to have chemotherapy I was told to get my flu jab as soon as possible, my surgery gave me an urgent appointment so it was a few days before my treatment began.

I'd be asking my chemo specialist, and I mean the Consultant, ring his secretary and leave an urgent message, always go to the top don't fanny about with nurses look what happened to poor Twink...and ask specifically EXACTLY WHY they think you shouldn't have the jab.

Re: Dont know whats right/wrong

Thanks for all your advice. It is good to hear different opinions.I have left it in the hands of my cancer nurse at the moment, she has promised to e.mail one of the oncologists consultants also my own GPs surgery,so I will see what they say next week,if Im not happy I will ring the secretary of the top consultant and ask to speak to him
