Nom it is because most mass produced bread uses a different method/ingredients than used to be used in order to speed up the process. This doesn't allow a long slow prove which is when the flavour of the bread develops.

Some 'manufactured' bread contains acetic acid to help to achieve a maximum rise , it actually tastes of vinegar.
I bought a small white farmhouse from M&S recently to make toast and I could't eat it because it smelt and tasted of vineagar . I gave it to the goats.

I love brown bread especially if it's Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Multiseeded loaf, from the in store bakery. It's lovely with a boiled egg!
I love the white bread l make in my bread maker.

Re: I hate wholemeal bread

I usually buy a Warburtons white toastie, a very occasional wholemeal loaf, but my absolute favourite, for dipping into soups, for small cheese sandwiches, or just buttered (or I use Anchor) is Asda's Mediterranean bread. £1 and delicious. It's dark in colour but I don't know what makes it that way.

Used to buy it in the Co-op but they charge £1.50.

Re: I hate wholemeal bread

I sometimes make bread sarnies - out of bread . I get 2 slices of Tesco seeded bread and a slice of white bread in between. I then stick em in my George Foreman Grill for a number of mins. The white bread becomes hot and steamy and the other 2 slice become toasted and crunchy.

Nice eh ?

This has brought to mind bread and butter pudding and bread pudding.

If one added a beaten egg and some dried fruit (and maybe dowsed the middle white slice in milk) might this be a bread and butter, without the butter, toastie?

go on ... go on ... go on

try it and report back
