Yes but generally there is a good deal of "play" involved so the balls can move. This picture of a padlock in the locked position shows better imo:

If that's the case, and there is a good deal of 'play', you shouldn't need to insert a thin metal strip to push the ballbearings out of the way, simply pulling the steel loop upwards would do exactly the same thing, wouldn't it?

HERE is the window section, from the inside.
The window handle moves a mechanism inside the sash to engage with the frame like THIS or THIS.

That is the locking mechanism, having a key on the inside doesn't improve the security of the window from the outside.

It might save children opening them from the inside.
You make a convincing case, so if I let you have the head office address of my insurers, would you please explain to them that window locks are unnecessary? Perhaps they might then permit me to remove the locks without increasing my premiums.

It is the internal Key that is unnecessary.

Fair enough. So if I let you have the head office address of my insurers, would you please explain to them that it is not necessary to lock my window locks, or perhaps to leave the key in the lock? Perhaps they might then permit me to leave the locks unlocked without increasing my premiums.

No it wouldn't because one of the two balls would still be located in the groove. As can be seen from the picture, if you were to tilt the lock to one side, one of the balls would drop more securely into the groove whilst the other ball would slide more out of its groove. To get both balls to slide in opposite directions would be impossible . . . unless you used the metal gimmicks.

I take your point, but I maintain that pulling up the loop would move both of the ball bearings inwards in the same way as would inserting a thin strip of metal down each of the holes, because the angled edges of the cutouts would act in the same way.

I still think, though, that inserting metal strips would not move the ball bearings sufficiently far, as the barrel would prevent their moving.

You'll probably prove me wrong by posting a YouTube video of someone doing it!

Re: Window lock stuck.

Use the Rapping Method:-

Pick up yer lock and turn the key..
The bolt pops out so eas-ily...

You don't need a hammer or a Video on TV...
Just don't forget where you put the key.....
