A strange Insect
This isn't really a pet, or an animal, but didn't know where else to post it.
Does anyone know what this little insect could be?
I can't get decent photo, so will just have to describe it.
1. It is like a fly of some sort, certainly an insect with wings anyway.
2. It is between quarter and half an inch long.
3. It's most remarkable feature is its colour. It has a really bright canary yellow body. No markings, no stripes, spots - nothing but this clear bright yellow.
4. It is a small neat, bullet shaped body.
5. The wings are black, but completely see-through, as if they are made from a lady's fine stocking.
I have googled loads of images of British insects and flys, but cannot find this one anywhere.
I have never seen them before, but have suddenly found three on different rose stems this week.
They also do not panic and fly off like a normal fly would if you approach it, they just sit there.
I would be glad of some ideas on what these things might be, and whether they are harmful to plants - or us.
The reason I ask if they might they be harmful to us is, when I was finishing planting something just before dusk last Tuesday, something bit my ankle. There was just one single puncture mark like a big needle had gone in my skin.
For the next 2 days and nights it got worse. Itching, throbbing, swelling and spreading down my foot.
I took Piriton, but couldn't stop it spreading further.
Went to the Doc's and I am now on Penicillan.
It has improved somewhat, but still swollen and very tender. They told me to go back if it doesn't get better.
I am wondering if this nasty bite is anything to do with these strange insects I have been finding this week, or just coincidence.
