Giant Vegetables

Hi

Any of you had an interest in growing them?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-s...wales-40852986

I used to, when I had the space, it was great fun.

I never won anything, but really enjoyed it, biggest I ever got was a 37lb cabbage.

I still do one marrow a year, well at least until this year, the littlies love it.

No we have always grown to eat, but my grandad won a few trophies for his marrows and root veg. You've reminded me I've got his ploughing trophies in a box somewhere, must look them out and show grace what her great grandad won.

Re: Giant Vegetables

I don't understand 'giant vegetables' and consider them to be a waste of effort and space ...

Small is beautiful where vegetables are concerned.

Whenever my brother comes to visit he brings some huge vegetables like a cabbage which would feed the entire village and onions the size of a melon half of which gets wasted.

Sorry competition growers , I am too practical to condone waste or growing vegetables that are large tough and tasteless.

How are giant vegetables grown differently from the average vegetables?

Re: Giant Vegetables

My SIL always grows his own runner beans and can be quite smug when showing how big they are when presenting me with a bag full. I haven't the heart to tell him that big doesn't always mean good and his long beans are almost all very stringy

Hope he doesn't read this! 🤗

I have grown my own beans this year, after a break of a few years, my neighbour's that they gave me last year were almost inedible, same as those you can buy in the shops.
In fact I gave a large bag away because they were too big yesterday.........................maybe that's what your SIL does, gets shot of all his stringy ones to you.

Re: Giant Vegetables

A friend of mine used to grow giant vegetables and entered them into shows, but it's a cuthroat world in the giant veg business, and jealous sabotage got so much of a problem he packed it in, he couldn't stand the nastiness and duplicity of some of the more fanatical any longer ...
