Toad of Longdogs Hall

I found this chap in my garden this morning sheltering under a low shrub. Apparently they only visit the pond during mating season but I'm hoping I might get some babies.

Me neither Muddy. The last one I saw was about fifteen years ago outside the front of my house. He was huge (about 7"). Frightened the life out of me when he came crawling out from under a plant.

I used to live in the Carribean and had loads of cane toads on my patio .
They were monsters and came to eat the dog food .
They thought the dogs water bowl was their own private swimming pool .

I just looked up the giant South American toad, makes my one look like a tadpole.

Re: Toad of Longdogs Hall

I was clearing some stuff from my little pond today and was surprised that there are still some tadpoles swimming around. There were thousands earlier this year and I had supposed they had all developed into froglets and left, as they do. Anyone know if it is normal still o have tadpoles in mid August?

Re: Toad of Longdogs Hall

He's a handsome chappy dongle.
I had one come every year for the last 6 or 7 years.
I am not sure, but I think he lived under the patio, but he hasn't turned up this year.

Do you think he's gone to your house for a change?

You perhaps don't remember, but several years ago I wrote about one of my dogs coming in from the garden late at night frothing and drooling like a rabid dog?
Frightened the life out of me. It was because she'd grabbed poor old Toady and he'd let that stuff out of his skin and it got all on her tongue. Had to give her milk quickly to antidote it.
I remember ringing the vet about midnight because her pupils went huge and she looked dreadful.

I slept with her that night, and she was OK next morning.
I saw Toady after that, so he was OK too.

I don't know Mups they may well be
I know cane toads in Australia are
Yet children keep them as pets !
I think they only let go their poison out of their skins if they are scared .
My dogs never touched them .
