Giant Sunflower

Anyone want to grow THE biggest Sunflower on the market?

Suttons Seeds have brought out Sunflower 'Giraffe.'

They say it grows to over 16ft high! "A golden yellow giant" they describe it.
Be a bit tricky to stake that one.

Seeds need to be sown next April.

Have a look at their picture:

Re: Giant Sunflower

I had a sun flower in the front garden once many years ago. It grew way over my head and during a particularly windy spell it blew over.

I got that many comments about it that I dug it up, wished I hadent now it was certainly a talking point.

Re: Giant Sunflower

That looks like a lot of fun. Why don't we have a fun sunflower growing competition next year? I've grown one over three meters tall for the next door neighbours son. He won third prize in the local school competition. We can all help each other with tips and see who comes out with the biggest sunflower.

Re: Giant Sunflower

Good idea Kev. Only thing is, I wouldn't know how to stake something that high, and I have no trellis to anchor it too either - 16 ft is some size.

Re: Giant Sunflower

The big one we had I tied three bamboo canes to it like a tripod and it held it quite stable. In the end the flower head was so heavy that it broke just underneath making it hang down and it looked rather sad.

Can you remember what length canes you might have used Kev?

Re: Giant Sunflower

If I remember right they were about three and a half meters. I'd been using hem as stakes for beans.
