Re the use of Xmas, there is a long history involved, the use of X for Christ's name: here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XmasI too hate the commercialization and the fact that it starts earlier and earlier every year. As to the Solstice, I like that idea; actually the early Christians did co-opt the winter festival .... Christ wasn't actually born in December!

I get fed up with the women at work moaning that they are cooking for 15 on Christmas day. Well why are you doing it?? You must have offered, stop moaning and get on with it if you want to be a martyr and have everyone praise your cooking for the rest of the year. BAH HUMBUG!!!!

I agree about there being too much commercialism these days but that doesn't stop me from enjoying Christmas. It's still a special time of the year to me and I have many happy memories of Christmas in past years. Waking up on Christmas morning still gives me that special feeling.
