Re: White poppy ?

My great uncle was a socialist and his beliefs were such that he would not pick up arms to kill or harm another human being.
He was awarded a medal for bravery as an unarmed non-combatant stretcher bearer during WW1.
Were he alive today, I would not be offended if he wore a white poppy on remembrance day.

Having said that, the first flowers that grew on the former battlefields of the Great War were red poppies, which is why remembrance day poppies are red.

Please note that other Remembrance Days are available. In Italy their Armistice is commemorated on November the 4th.

"Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red" is still one of the most beautiful, haunting, reverent, and moving images I have ever seen. Some things the British do are unsurpassed in elegance, and this was one.

From my time in the USA I seem to recall that Memorial Day in May is for remembering those who died while serving their country, and dates back to the American Civil War between North and South. Veterans Day is the 11th of November and celebrates all U.S. military veterans both living and dead, so somewhat different to our Remembrance/Armistice Day.
My apologies if I have got this wrong.

I have nothing against people promoting peace and people like your great uncle did a wonderful job, whilst adhering to their personal beliefs, but I just wish they would choose their own date to promote peace ( and I would support it) rather than Armistice day, when we remember those who died for their country.

Ironic really isn't it, that it's the peace lovers who are causing the disputes on Rememberance Day.

Oh so, Merchant Navy (civilians) Officers and crews didn't die during the battle of the Atlantic, Firemen (civilians) weren't killed during the Blitz on many cities across the UK, Transport workers (civilians) didn't die trying to maintain an effective transport system in the teeth of bombing and strafing raids by German aircraft. Nurses (civilians) didn't tend the injured caused by German bombing raids, Ambulance crews (civilians) didn't care for and trasport the injured to hospitals. And many, many more - all civilians who deserve to equally be honoured.

We have had this argument earlier UJ and I replied. If you didn't like my reply that is your choice, but please don't expect me to type it again!

When I wear a red poppy, I don't just wear it for the servicemen & women who gave their lives, I wear it for anyone who suffered including those who survived but lost family. I also see it as a mark of respect to the older generation who helped Britain recover.

I completely agree.

The white poppy organisation is detracting financially, even in a small way, and morally from the real reason the red poppy appeal was initiated by Field Marshal Haigh after the end of the First World War.

Where does the money go?
"Money raised over and above the cost of producing, publicising and distributing the poppies goes to fund our education and campaigning work, thus promoting nonviolent approaches to conflict and challenging militarism. Such work regrettably does not attract much funding and so we rely heavily on the generosity of people like you." (From the Peace Pledge Union's own web site.)
A political incentive.

Why do the white poppy supporters insist on placing white poppies and wreaths on the same day as the Remembrance Day parades?
There is absolutely no reason why the 'white poppy parades' should take place on or near to Armistice Day. They have nothing to do with Armistice Day, and there is no reason why a 'peace protest' should need to take place on that day, especially since opponents of the white poppy argue that the traditional red poppy already encompasses the sentiments claimed for the white poppy, such as "remembering all victims of war", and consider that it undermines the message of remembrance. As others have said, white poppies could equally be sold on a different day of the year.

So why do they do it?
Presumably because they are 'jumping on the bandwagon' of red poppy sales in an attempt to drum up more financial support for their political motives, and this is likely to be to the detriment of monies raised by red poppy sales which are spent on the support of injured servicemen and their families.

Re: White poppy ?

I always thought the red poppy was to commemorate the blood of the soldiers left on the fields.
