Re: Sweeteners

I have Hermasetas, just one in tea. When I rarely have a coffee it's half a teaspoon of sugar.

I don't like sugary drinks ie Coke 'n' stuff like that. Just not used to it. As a child a lorry came round selling soft drinks (much the same as the ice cream van coming round). Occasionally we were allowed to have some Dandelion and Burdock. That was nice

When I brought my daughter up I only offered her apple juice, tangerine juice (from Boots) or water. thankfully, she wasn't keen on other soft drinks.
Now, apart from alcohol, she generally orders Coke when out socialising and drinks plain water throughout the day.

I used to get a bottle of elder flower water (with lemon I think) from Tesco. It was lovely too. I seem to remember it was fizzy. Very tasty and thirst quenching.

Now, even though I don't really like water, I do drink it in the evenings when I'm thirsty.

I'm with you on that one, not to mention that fish do disgusting things in water. I only drink beer, tea or coffee in that order of preference.

Embarrassingly I usually have to break up the sugar when I have visitors because I never use it, it is like salt, which I also never use, there is more than enough in my food.

Re: Sweeteners

I don't sweeten my tea of coffee (unless I have it with milk in, which is rare) but do love rhubarb so must have some sort of sweetener that doesn't interfere with my blood sugar. After trying many of them, I have discovered stevia based sweeteners are brilliant. They do not break down in cooking like, say, aspartame. They do not have a laxative effect (with me, anyway) unlike, say, the violent xylitol.
Some people say they do not like the taste of stevia but I reckon that is because they use too much. When the literature says it is so many hundred times sweeter than sugar, it is correct, a much smaller amount is needed to get the same amount od sweetness. This is well worth bearing in mind when considering the high price of most stevia based sweeteners, a packet lasts ages so the cost per use is less than it seems at first..

Re: Sweeteners

My lunch box that I took to school when I was between 8 and 11 years old, contained 'golden syrup' butties...I believe that my Mum thought that it was giving me energy, whereas I've now got type 2 Diabetes...
So I do try to reduce my sugar intake, ( 1 sweetener in tea/coffee) No sugar on my Weetabix or Shreddies, at breakfast. I'm not tempted by sweets or chocolate...
I'm currently managing my blood sugars without medication, although the readings are slightly higher than I would like.
I have a review next week and I'm sure that they will try to get me to start taking tablets, but I can be quite stubborn...
With my weight steady at 9 stones ( has been for most of my life) and my BMI at about 23. I think 'I'm fine!
